Proficient & Passed Over Data Note
Proficiency
The shares of students deemed proficient on the NYS Math 7 Assessment are from the Annual Elementary and Middle Math Results in the Report Card Database for school year 2023-2024, available publicly here. School level assessment data was then matched to course enrollment and school enrollment data. The percentage of students deemed proficient is the number of students deemed proficient over the total number of students who tested in Grade 7 Math. This does not include students who sat for the Regents Math 7 assessment.
Passed Over
Course enrollment data for grade 8 Algebra I was provided through a public records request, for school year 2024-2025. School enrollment data for grade 8 from the 2024-2025 school year can be found here.
The course codes and descriptions used for this analysis are from the NYSED School Codes for the Exchange of Data (SCED) Course Catalog, which can be found here.
For our analysis of access to Algebra I courses in 8th grade, we began with a universe of 1,519 schools that serve students in both grade 7 and 8. Out of these, 1,446 schools (95% of schools) were included in the analysis. Schools with fewer than 50 total students or fewer than 10 students in grade 7 or grade 8 were excluded. District 75 schools and Special Act schools were excluded from the analyses. Additionally, schools for which enrollment data and/or course enrollment data was unavailable, or which could not be matched between the course enrollment and school enrollment datasets, were excluded from the analyses. Course enrollment data was suppressed for subgroups where between 1-5 students were enrolled in a course within a school. This means that in some cases, a course may be offered at a school but too few students of a given subgroup are enrolled to be included in the analysis.
